Did you know, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 37.3 million people or 11.3% of the population have diabetes? 28.7 million people that have been diagnosed and 8.5 million people that are undiagnosed. It is also stated that another 96 million people or 38% of the population have prediabetes. These numbers are staggering and have been getting progressively worse over the past few years. In 2015, when Da Suga was founded, there were 30.3 million people or 9.4% of the population diagnosed with diabetes. In the course of 7 years, we have added another 7 million people to the roster, which works out to about 1 million people diagnosed per year since 2015. The very definition of an epidemic.
Diabetes is now the 8th leading cause of death. Killing more people than AIDS and Breast Cancer combined. It is a relentless disease, meticulous and gruesome in its ability to damage the body. There are no spared organs (eyes, heart, kidney, etc.). Diabetes is an all encompassing disease that has proven to take its toll not only on diabetic patients but their families as well. Since the beginning of COVID 19 in 2019, it was found that diabetic patients suffered especially harsh complications due to their disease state. Many diabetics also suffer from pain in their feet and legs caused by damage to the small blood vessels leading to numbness, pain, and difficulty detecting sores. Did you know amputations among diabetics make up 60% of the 73,000 non-traumatic amputations? Preventable with education and proper management.
